Glock's Sevigny Grabs Limited Win at Florida Open

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. - As the current national champion he's recognized first and foremost as one of the top Production division shooters in practical shooting, but Glock's Dave Sevigny switched gears in the first major match of the competition season and claimed the Limited division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association's (USPSA) Florida Open Handgun Championship.

The Smyrna, Ga. shooter started the match slow giving up stage wins to fellow competitors but remained within striking distance hovering in second place before making his move on the sixth stage of the match. It would be the first of three crucial stage wins that would propel Sevigny to first place and a final 1501.2273 points for the win.

At the start of the match however it was Blake Miguez of New Iberia, La. out in front with winning performances on the first and second stages of the match. Miguez maintained control of the lead through the next two stages before ultimately falling to third place with a final score of 1451.9821.

On stage five Travis Tomasie of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit jumped out in front with a win on that stage, and an earlier win on stage three. Tomasie, who is the reigning Limited-10 national champion, remained in the lead through the next two stages before slipping back to second where he would finish the match with a final score of 1452.2338.

Sevigny followed his stage six win with a second-place finish to the Army Marksmanship Unit's Daniel Horner on stage seven, putting him just 0.0054 points out of first.

Then with a win on the eighth stage Sevigny picked up just over nine points and overtook Tomasie. He expanded his lead on the ninth stage then slammed the door shut with a win on the 10th and final stage of the match giving him a margin of victory of 48.9935 points.

Finishing fourth was last year's third-place shooter Ted Puente who ended the competition with a final score of 1366.2033. Horner rounded out the top five with 1353.6188 points.

Elsewhere in Limited division competition, Sevigny's Glock teammate Randi Rogers of Smyrna, Ga. finished 16th overall and took the women's title with 1087.3644 points. Among the seniors, Dave Mueller of Tallahassee, Fla. claimed the super senior title by toping all senior shooters with a score of 952.6618. San Juan, Puerto Rico's Alfredo Colon finished as the top senior with 898.0756 points.

The USPSA Florida Open Handgun Championship was held this past weekend at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Fla. and drew more than 365 top competition shooters, including competitors from Brazil, Canada, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Norway, Russia, Serbia, the Slovak Republic and Spain.

The next major match on the USPSA calendar is the 2011 Area 6 Regional Pistol Championship which will be held April 15-17 at the Universal Shooting Academy.
